The XM16E1 was a prototype of the M16 rifle used by the US military during the Vietnam War. It was an improved version of the original M16, featuring a forward assist mechanism to help push the bolt into battery and a more reliable chrome-plated chamber to prevent jams. The XM16E1 also had a three-pronged flash suppressor and a slightly longer barrel than the original M16. The improvements made to the XM16E1 addressed some of the reliability issues of the M16 and were later incorporated into the standard M16A1 rifle.
